You may or may not have heard of SEO. It’s one of those acronyms that is floating around and sounds all-important when you’re talking about websites. It is important!
What is SEO and why do I care?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. SEO is all about helping people find – and want to visit – your website.
When you type a search phrase into any of the popular search engines like Google, Yahoo, or Bing, you get a list of pages that are related (more or less) to the topic you want to find. When people search for your business, you want your website to appear high in the list on that first page of search results. You also want it to appear with an enticing and meaningful description of the content on the page. You want that search phrase that was typed in to appear in the page summary so that people realize that your page – and therefore your business – matches what they are looking for.
Don’t be bamboozled!
There are a lot of website developers out there who will tell you that they can get your business on that first page. We’re not saying that isn’t true, but it’s certainly not as easy as they make it sound. Getting your page rank up takes time and work.
It’s true that you can spend money on AdWords and pay-per-click marketing to get higher rankings faster, however, these rankings will start to fall again after you stop paying. Generally, this is only worth while for certain types of businesses.
How do we do it?
Increasing SEO rankings is a combination of:
- Careful keyword research
- Good page design
- Thoughtfully written page content
- Proper use of underlying CSS and HTML5
- Keeping the site content fresh with regular updates
- Back-linking from well-ranking associate sites
- Tweaking the design based on analytics data over time
We can work with you on all aspects of this. It will take patience, dedication, and cooperation, but together we can make your website an online hit!
Don’t be discouraged: just having a website is huge. People will be able to search locally and find you much easier right from the start! And since many people don’t even own a phone book anymore, a good website is vital to being found by new customers!
